Automated Trading – Are You Still Running Windows XP?

Automated Trading: If you’re like many automated traders, you like to stick with what works, and if your system is working exactly how you want it, then you’re loathe to change. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right? Admittedly, there is something to be said for that line of thinking. I myself still have an older, seldom used computer running XP, service pack 3. It’s not often in use so the risks are minimal.

That’s not the case if you’re automated trading to conduct your trades. You’re online constantly, and I know you love your system, but Microsoft stopped supporting XP months ago. Already, there has been a security exploit found that Microsoft has openly said it won’t fix. You can bet on the fact that there will be others, sooner rather than later.

Of course it doesn’t help that Windows 8 is a really big, radical departure from XP. It means essentially starting from scratch. Unlearning most of what you know about XP, and learning this new operating system, and of course, all the while, trying to keep up with your automated trading Platforms. That can be both hard and frustrating.

Still, an upgrade to Windows 8 does offer some nice advantages. One thing you can do in Windows 8 that you can’t do in XP is run two pieces of software in tandem, and in split screen mode. No more alt-tabbing between applications to check on things. Everything you want and need to see is right there on the screen in front of you.

Automated Trading With XP

You’ll be traveling a well-trod path at this point, and should see smooth upgrade sailing because of it. If you haven’t upgraded yet, it’s long past time to do so.
